In the 1990s, a group of local fishermen in Vietnam experienced an unusual surprise while casting their nets. Instead of catching fish, they began hauling in pottery fragments. This unexpected find prompted them to alert the authorities, leading to the commencement of the Hoi An shipwreck excavation in 1996.

Upon investigation, divers uncovered a significant cache of ceramics aboard the wreck. The ship, which is believed to have sunk during the 1400s or 1500s, was transporting a large quantity of valuable pottery, highlighting its role in the vibrant trade networks of the time.

The Porcelain Treasures of the Hoi An Shipwreck The porcelain plates recovered from the Hoi An shipwreck date back to the 1400s and 1500s, characterized by their striking blue and white designs. During the excavation, a staggering total of 250,000 fragments was discovered, likely dislodged from the seafloor by the force of a powerful storm.

Among the most valuable artifacts unearthed were three exquisite dragon ewers, which fetched impressive prices at auction: $79,500, $63,000, and $57,500, respectively. These relics not only reflect the artistry of the time but also highlight the significance of maritime trade in the exchange of luxury goods.
